This Week’s Wine Tasting
Sparkling Wines and Champagnes
Col Vetoraz Prosecco Brut– Valdobbiadene (Veneto), Italy. “Produced with fruits grown in the high hills (Rive) facing west, where they can reach the ideal maturity to produce this sparkling wine. Fine and slightly aromatic bouquet. Dry and intense to the taste. Very harmonious.” $17.99
Jean-Francois Merieau Bulles– Touraine (Loire Valley), France. “80% Chenin Blanc, 20% Sauvignon Blanc. Aged for 18-20 months sur latte before release. 4 g/l dosage. “Bulles” means “bubbles”. While the geographic region of Touraine includes the famous vineyards of Vouvray, Montlouis, and Chinon, there is also an AOC Touraine which produces white, red, and sparkling wines. Touraine is one of the few places in France that allows wine varietals to be placed on the front label.” $17.99
Louis de Grenelle Saumur Rose– Saumur (Loire Valley), France. “100% Cabernet Franc from vineyards just outside of Saumur. Fermented and aged in tank, this is produced using the Méthode Champenoise. Very low dosage to protect the aromas and flavor of the varietal. Bright, crisp, and delicious sparkling rosé.” $15.99
La Spinetta Moscato– Asti (Piedmont), Italy. 100% Moscato. “The bouquet is sweet with crisp green apple and honeysuckle. This wine surprises with remarkable freshness and brilliant fruit flavors, reminiscent of apple, spiced pear, and honey.” $18.99
Gaston Chiquet Brut Tradition– Champagne, France. “As its name implies, a classic blended Champagne: 45% Pinot Meunier, 35% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir, incorporating base wines from more than one harvest. The cuvée tradition has been honoured at the Nobel Banquet 2013. Representative of the terroir from which it is produced: supple and fine with good length.” $39.99
Pehu Simonet Blanc de Noirs– Champagne, France. “David Pehu makes this equipoised Blanc de Noirs exclusively from Pinot Noir grown in his Grand Cru parcels of Verzeney and herein delivers a telling, true-to-type Montagne de Reims –exemplary in conveying the limestone into a fetching champagne of Pinot Noir. Honeycomb, poached apple and violets carry on to the palate from that first proud breath and curl about raspberries and soda bread.” $60.99
