The specific wines for the tasting are:
Cantina Ostro Prosecco Brut NV
Fruili, Italy. 100% Glera from Prosecco DOC, from vines that average 20 years. “Estate vineyards are planted on clay- and limestone-rich soils, unique to the region, with topsoils of gravel, the classic terroir of Grave. Second fermentation takes place in tank (Charmat method) on fine lees. Aged 3 months in tank before bottling. Fine bubbles. Bright gold with citrus blossom, apple, toast aromas. Light and lively.” $16.99
Domaine Francis Blanchet Pouilly Fume 2022
Pouilly Fume, Loire Valley, France. 100% Sauvignon Blanc. “A single-vineyard selection, ‘Kriotine,’ from a plot just under five acres. The grapes were hand-harvested. Pressed full cluster; fermented and aged on fine lees in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks. Aromas of crushed oyster shells, white flowers, crisp pear, lemon rind. Flavors of limes and lemons, fresh white fruits, dusting of white pepper and sea salt on the finish. Crisp and lively. ‘Kriotine’ is a fantasy name inspired by the word ‘criot,’ which in local dialect describes a vineyard terroir with many white stones.” $29.99
Domaine de Figueirasse Gris de Gris Rose 2023
Provence, France. Domaine de Figueirasse was established in 1905. A blend of Grenache noir, Grenache gris, Grenache blanc, and Cinsault (field blend). “Just 200 yards from the Mediterranean coastline, estate vineyards are influenced by the sea. Grapes are destemmed and pressed immediately to extract the delicate pink color of ‘gris de gris’ wines. Fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks. Dry, lively and refreshing. Aromas and flavors of tangy red cherries, pomegranate, fresh ginger, white pepper.” The winery is certified organic. $17.99
Domaine de la Madone Beaujolais Villages 2022
Le Perréon, Beaujolais, Burgundy, France. Le Perreon.100% Gamay from vines that are 40-60 years old, some 100 years. The winery was established in the 1960s. “Estate vineyards cling to very steep hillsides some 1,600 to 2,000 feet above sea level, some of the highest in the region. Soils are mostly pink decomposed granite, similar to cru Fleurie. The grapes are hand-harvested. Fermented on indigenous yeasts and aged in tank. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Aromas of raspberries, cherry blossoms, minerals. Tangy, juicy yet refined, silky; flavors of red berries, baking spices.” $19.99
Sarrazin Givry Sous La Rouche 2022
Cote Chalonnaise, Burgundy, France. 100% Pinot Noir from vines that average 40+ years. The winery was established in 1964. “The vineyard ‘Sous la Roche’ (French: under the rock) is one of Givry’s highest-altitude plots. Soil is gravelly, more limestone than clay. The grapes are hand-harvested. Fermented on indigenous yeasts in open top wooden fermenters aged in oak barrels (25% new) for 12 months. Unfined and unfiltered. Aromas of violets, raspberries, a hint of licorice. Silky and refined; flavors of red plums, black cherries.” $42.99
Ronchi Barbaresco 2020
Piedmont, Italy. 100% Nebbiolo from 30–40-year-old vines. “The Rocca family’s Nebbiolo wines are still an insider’s secret, representing some of the better values in Barbaresco. This fourth-generation vine-growing family lives, literally, in the ‘Ronchi’ vineyard— with older vines that wind around the family home and cellars. The grapes were hand-harvested. Fermentation on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled, stainless-steel tanks. Aged for two years in large (20HL) Slavonian casks (‘botti’). Aromas of black cherries, licorice, game, light smoke; full-bodied and concentrated yet balanced, with moderate tannins and good length.” $39.99
