The biggest mass of a cigar is the filler. It is usually cut to the length of the cigar and known as long leaf. The binder encloses the filler and gives the cigar its proper size and shape.
The quality of the wrapper is crucial to any cigar. A good wrapper should have flavor and steady-burning qualities. The wrapper should exhibit appealing appearance, texture, and aroma. Wrappers are often characterized as smooth, silky, or oily.
Variations in size and shape are numerous and strict dimensions are not standardized. Some general sizes are (ring gauge x length):
- Churchill: 54 x 7
- Lonsdale: 42 x 6 ½
- Toro: 54 x 6
- Robusto: 54 x 5
- Corona: 44 x 5 1/2

There are seven basic colors of wrapper leaf. They range from the candela (light green), through the colorado (often called “natural”) to the maduro and oscuro (ripened and mature).
